The photograph on the right shows a street view with the Monument à Colom in the background. Located near the waterfront at the Plaça del Portal de la Pau, the cast-iron monument commemorates the voyages of Christopher Columbus.
The ornate column and statue of Columbus were erected for the Universal Exhibition of 1888. One can even go up the tower to an observation area for an impressive view of the city and its port area. It is worth doing, especially for the photographs of the city.
I especially like to stroll down the tree-lined Rambla and approach the monument by foot. The Rambla stretches for about 1 kilometer from the Plaça de Catalunya to the Plaça del Portal de la Pau. Pedestrians usually walk at their own pace. with no impediments.
The Rambla seems to be always crowded. On Fridays, it seems as if the entire city has headed for this area. With numerous small businesses lining the street, everyone is buying something. Tourists stop to snap pictures and look at the sights. There are even curious street performers that entertain the crowds with their antics.
If you want to see the central area of the city, I urge you to make your way to the Rambla. The crowds may be daunting, but it is worth the walk. And make sure you take in the sights, smells, and sounds.
Enjoy!
