Ancient Roman Ruins in Barcelona

Vía Sepulcral Romana

Within walking distance of the Plaça Catalunya,  you will find a small urban plaza, the Plaça de la Vila de Madrid, which contains the remains of a Roman burial site. Surrounded by elegant buildings, shops, and a small playground, the site is the most important burial site from the Roman city of Barcino

More than 70 tombs from the 1st to 3rd centuries CE have been excavated and preserved for visitors to see. One enters from a raised walkway onto the archeological site, which is slightly below the level of the street. Visitors can stroll through the ruins of this ancient necropolis and see the arrangement of tombs along the Vía sepulcral, the name given to the Roman road from the ancient city to this burial zone.

Adjacent to the site is a small museum run by MUHBA - the Museu d'Historia de Barcelona. With over 60 artifacts found in the graves and burial area, the museum provides details about burial rituals and funeral practices during the Roman period.

The museum is open on Mondays to Friday, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm; on Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm; on Holidays, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The entrance fee is 2 euros.
